WHAT ?

13 Reasons Why based on the best-selling Jay Asher, young adult book of the same name follows teenage protagonist Clay Jensen [Dylan Minnette] who receives a mysterious shoe box with his name on it lying on his porch. The shoe box contains seven double sided cassette tapes recorded by his classmate and crush Hannah [Katherine Langford], who recently committed suicide. Each tape reports an emotional entry in an “audio diary”, with each side of the tapes addressed to a different classmate of Hannah's, explaining their involvement and how their specific actions affected her and ultimately contributed to her eventual decision to take her own life.- 13 Reasons Why. The recipients of the tapes are told to pass the tapes on to the next classmate, after they have listen to them. If they don’t, pass the tapes they are threatened that they will be released publicly which, their perceived guilt encourages each person to pass them on.

The shows story is told through dual narratives and perspectives the protagonist Clay as he listens to the tapes and through the voice and described past experiences of Hannah, both heard and seen by the audience.

The tapes set Clay on a course to uncover the full story behind Hannah’s decision to end her life and in doing so uncovers other secrets and stories of his other classmates. 13 Reasons Why portrays the everyday issues and dramas of a teen experience in school, such as teen angst, bullying, identity, sexuality etc, whilst also highlighting serious issues such as mental health, depression, sexual assault and rape.

SEASON 1 CATCH UP...

RESPONSE ?

The show receive a largely positive response from critics and audiences who praised the delivery of the subject matter, in relations to the story, acting and the adaption of the source material.

However, controversy was attracted by some (mainly non teens and young people) who took issue with the portrayal of teen angst and Hannah’s downward spiral that resulted in her suicide, commenting that it was unrealistic and unconvincing. Many mental health organisations and professionals raised issues with how professionals where depicted as ineffective for young people who may be experiencing trauma or depression in real life and how that may impact there decision top seek help.

The graphic depictions of rape, self harm, mature content and most notedly Hannah’s suicide sparked debate and discussion around the world, with young people, parents and professionals all getting involved. Some people raised concerns that to depiction of suicide in such a detailed and graphic way was not necessary and could be harmful to young audiences.

WHERE TO NEXT ?

So where is season 2 going to take us, Hannah’s story may seem to have concluded in a round about way however there are many other books that have been opened. And judging by the new season 2 tagline, there is still a lot more to discover. This season also seems to be continuing its theme of retro media, swapping out the evidence of cassette tapes for polaroid pictures, because mp3's and jpeg pictures are just too easy for this generations teens... I wonder where this is going.

“The truth is developing”

[Season 2 Tagline]

Season 1 left off with Clay just beginning to come to terms and grieve the girl that he loved and lost. Season 2 is expected to pick up a couple months after where the last left off, and clay is said to have been quite busy during those months. What has he been up to?

We hope to see some justice come Bryce’s way, for his actions towards both Hannah and Jessica.

In the last episode, 13 we saw Clay’s classmates Tyler, who experiences bullying and social exclusion throughout season one getting hold of a riffle. So we can expect the very topical subject of gun violence and schools shootings to be explored in season 2. Hopefully we wont have to witness an actually school shooting.

We are also expecting to see Jessica’s journey coping and recovering from being a victim and survivor of sexual assault. And see her return to school after sharing her experience.

And what will be the consequences faced by school councillor Mr. Porter, who unbeknownst to him was on the receiving end Hannah's last attempt at a cry for help. A person that not only questioned Hannah’s disclosures, but didn't take any action. How will the guilt of his lack of support towards Hannah and her eventual decision affect his future work as the school counsellor.

SEASON 2 WILL BE AVAILABLE WORLDWIDE ON NETFLIX,

APRIL 18 2018.
